The correct way to measure your windows
If it’s time to replace your current windows you may be interested in finding out how to correctly measure the window space so you can purchase custom window fittings from your local home improvement or glass store.
How to correctly measure windows
The first thing you need to do is grab a tape measure and ladder. Once you’re comfortable standing in front of your window, you’ll want to take 3 horizontal measurements. The first is to measure the distance from the frame at the top to the middle and then to the bottom.
Once you have the smallest measurement of these three, make a special note of it because this will be your ‘rough opening width’. Windows are always classified as width then height.
The next thing you’ll need to do is take vertical measurements to find the window height. To do this, measure from the top to bottom of your frame on all sides – right, left, middle. Circle or make a mental note of the smallest measurement as this will become your ‘rough opening height’.
The final part of measuring your windows is to measure the window depth. Depth will be measured by running a tape measure from the outside of the frame to the inside of the frame.
Do this in more than one area of your window to make sure you have an accurate measurement. The smallest number, again, will be your final one.
Contacting a professional custom window company
Now that you know how large your windows are, it’s time to contact a custom window company to come to your property and give you a quote – or do it over the phone.
You’ll want to see if it’s cheaper to have them purchase the glass for you or if purchasing from a home improvement store is best. Regardless of which route you choose, having the professionals complete the job is the best bet.
