Using a remote desktop connection is standard practice for many employees today. The ability to access a server “from the outside” is now essential for remote help professions and for using Microsoft’s terminal services. But it is also possible to use this type of program at home, in order to easily and comfortably access your external office. However, their installation is not that easy, which is why there is a range of tools for remote offices, designed to simplify this step. What exactly is a remote desktop connection? What should we pay attention to? And what are the practical alternatives available?

What does remote desktop mean?

The English term remote desktop literally means remote desktop. Both terms are commonly used in French. A remote desktop connection allows you to connect an individual computer (the client) to other computers (the server). As long as the technical conditions are met, the user can create a remote desktop session from almost anywhere. He thus obtains, depending on the authorizations, full access to the remote computer. You can imagine how it works: while being comfortably at home with your private computer, you can access all the programs, files and network resources of your desktop computer, as if you were at your workplace.

Requirements for establishing a remote desktop connection

To establish a remote desktop connection, there are a number of technical components that must first be taken into account. For a successful remote connection, the computer must be connected to the Internet or to the same network. You must therefore ensure that the server is active and has a working network connection. Also be sure to connect the remote desktop to the server. Also check that you can access the network in question from outside, and that you have the rights to create a remote desktop connection. Finally, make sure you are registered as a remote user and have the password required to establish the connection.

Instructions for setting up a remote desktop

Microsoft offers a suitable network protocol for remote desktop users, the remote desktop protocol (RDP). RDP is like Microsoft’s terminal services control tool (Remote Desktop Services) and ensures the execution of remote desktop commands. It makes it possible to control both the client terminal and the server terminal, and therefore to control the transmission of the content of the screen, as well as the data relating to the keyboard and the mouse. It is therefore not necessary to use a Windows server. Choose the Remote desktop tool for this matter.

Windows Remote Assistance

The Remote Desktop for Windows is one of the possible options for remote desktop. It allows users to invite an outside user into their system. Make sure the Remote Desktop Connection feature is enabled. This functionality is accessed through the following path: Start> Computer> Remote use. In the Remote Assistance section, select the Allow remote assistance connections to this computer check box.
