Learn Rummy Quickly in Few Easy Steps
If you have a friends’ circle that is obsessed with rummy card games, you will surely want to master this game too. While the rules of the game are shared everywhere, understanding the game will require a little practice and guidance. We hope to provide you some simple tips to learn rummy quickly through the following steps. If you follow the guidelines and methods listed below, you won’t have difficulty mastering this excellent card game in a few weeks. So, here are our simple tips:
First Learn the Rummy Terminology
Before we learn any game, it is important to understand the different terms used to describe the game. This rule does not alter even in rummy card games. You need to first understand the terminology used in rummy card games. This will help you grasp the game when you read about it or follow posts related to rummy. Here we have used the most common terminology used in the Indian Rummy game:
Pure/Natural Sequence
This is a sequence that does not make use of jokers at all and is completed only by the cards of sign and value required.
Real/Artificial Sequence
This is a sequence that can be completed by using jokers in place of the missing cards in the sequence.
Life
Till the life is formed, a person’s hand is regarded as the full hand. This means, life is an arrangement of cards that prevents a hand from being counted as full hand. The definition of life may vary based on the rummy variation you are playing, namely 10 cards rummy, 13 cards rummy and 21 cards rummy.
Low Point Cards
As the name rightly suggests, low point cards are cards that have lower points. In rummy games, the cards from 2 to 5 number are regarded as low point cards.
High Point Cards
Just the opposite of low point cards, the high point cards are cards of greater value or points. Cards from 6 to 10 are treated as high point cards. Apart from these, picture cards may also be treated as high point cards as they all have a value of 10 points.
Picture Cards
A (Ace), K(King), Q(Queen) and J(Jack) are picture cards in the deck. All these cards have a value of 10 points.
Melds/Sets
Melds or sets are arrangement of cards that are of the same number in value but belong to different signs. Melds can be made from number cards as well as picture cards.
First Drop
If a player drops his hand after seeing it without even playing the first move, it is termed as first drop. A minimal penalty is charged to players for choosing first drop.
Second Drop
When a player plays a couple of turns and realises that he cannot win the game, he may choose to quit mid-way. This is referred to as second drop and the points charged here are double that of points charged for first drop.
Full Hand
When the opponent wins before you have completed your life, your hand is regarded as a full hand and points in the hand are considered as maximum points. The number of points counted for a full hand may vary based on the variation of rummy you are playing.
Joker
Joker is a card that is used in place of other cards in a sequence or a set to complete it. In a deck, there are some cards that are joker cards and are invariably used as jokers. Blank cards in a deck may also be used by some as jokers.
Pulled-out Joker
In the game of rummy, the player next to the dealer pulls out a card randomly to represent the pulled-out joker. If the player pulls out A of hearts then all the A cards are treated as jokers.
Open Card
In rummy games, the dealer or the player next to the dealer may keep the topmost card in the deck open. This card is referred to as the open card.
Disposed Pile
This is the pile of cards disposed by the players each time they keep a card they have pulled out from the deck.
Dealer
Dealer is the person who distributes the cards to other players during a round of rummy. In each round, the dealer keeps changing.
Then Understand the Types of Sequences Made
There are many types of sequences that can be made by combining the cards differently. For example, you may combine different number cards of the same sign in ascending or descending order to make a number card sequence. You may combine picture cards together to form a picture card sequence. You can also make mixed card sequences that include number cards as well as picture cards.
Then Understand the Types of Melds Made
Just like sequences can be made differently, melds or sets can also be formed using number cards or picture cards. You may also use joker cards to complete the melds or sequences.
Try to Figure Out the Optimum Use of Jokers
Jokers can save the game if you know how to use them wisely. Try to understand how to use jokers to reduce the points or to make the perfect sequences.
Understand When It Is Right to Quit Rummy Games
Rummy may be played as a one round game as in points rummy or a series game as in Deals Rummy or Pool Rummy. You need to be wise to understand when you should quit the game, especially in series card games. Don’t hesitate to choose first drop or second drop when you think it is appropriate.
